Where to Find Free Sound Effects: 2 Must-Visit Libraries Revealed

What you’ll learn in this post:

🎵 The two best free sound effect libraries every video creator needs to know

✅ Exactly how to search, preview, and download sounds from each site — step by step

⚖️ What Creative Commons licensing means and why it matters for your videos

If you’ve been skipping sound effects in your videos because you assume they cost money, I have great news for you. Free sound effects are absolutely out there — and in this post I’m sharing my two favorite libraries where you can grab them without spending a single dime. Watch the video below to see me walk through both sites live!

Watch the Video Below:

Why Free Sound Effects Belong in Every Video

As an Emmy Award winner, I can tell you that sound is half the experience of any video. People often focus entirely on visuals and forget that audio pulls viewers in emotionally.

In my experience working with hundreds of entrepreneurs, adding sound effects does two powerful things. First, it makes your video more fun and engaging to watch. Second, it signals to viewers when something new is happening on screen — like a graphic popping up or a transition happening.

That little audio cue tells your viewer, “Hey, pay attention — something cool just appeared!” It sounds like a small detail. But trust me, it makes a huge difference in how professional your content feels.

Tip 1

Pixabay: Over 990,000 Free Sound Effects With No Account Needed

My first go-to library for free sound effects is Pixabay. With over 990,000 royalty-free sound effects at your fingertips, you will almost always find exactly what you need.

Here’s what makes Pixabay my absolute favorite for quick grabs. You do not need to create an account. You just visit the site, search, and download. Done.

Here’s how to use it step by step:

🎯 Go to pixabay.com

🔍 Click on “Sound Effects” in the navigation

⌨️ Type in the sound you’re looking for — for example, “wish transition”

▶️ Preview the options by clicking play on each one

⬇️ Click “Download” on the one you love and it goes straight to your computer

I love that you can listen before you download. Because sometimes what sounds dramatic in your head is way too dramatic in your actual video. I tried a “wish” sound effect once and it felt like I was narrating a movie trailer. Not exactly the vibe I was going for!

Because Pixabay offers royalty-free content, you can use these sounds in your YouTube videos, social content, and business videos without any copyright concerns. That peace of mind is priceless.

Tip 2

Freesound.org: Half a Million Free Sound Effects for Creators

My second favorite library for free sound effects is Freesound.org. This site has an incredible 500,000 different sound effects to choose from. That is half a million options!

However, unlike Pixabay, you do need to create a free account before you can download anything. But don’t let that stop you — it takes just a couple of minutes to register.

And here’s something I want to reassure you about. In my experience, they don’t bombard your inbox with emails. Creating an account here is really just a formality.

Here’s how to get started:

🖥️ Go to freesound.org

📝 Click “Register” and fill in your basic info

🔎 Once logged in, search for any sound you want — like “cartoon pop”

⚖️ Check the license listed under the sound before downloading

⬇️ Click “Download” and the file saves right to your computer

Understanding the Creative Commons License on Freesound

This is important, so pay attention here. Not every sound on Freesound carries the same license. You need to check before you download.

Here’s a quick breakdown of what you’ll see:

Creative Commons Zero (CC0) — This is the best one. The creator has waived all rights and released it to the public domain. Use it freely, no credit required.

⚠️ Other Creative Commons licenses — These may require you to credit the artist who created the sound effect in your video description.

As an Emmy Award winner, I always say respecting creators is just good karma. If a sound requires attribution, simply drop a quick credit in your video description. It takes ten seconds and keeps you legally protected.

Feel free to refer back to the video above to see exactly how I search and download from both sites — it really helps to see it in action.

How Free Sound Effects Instantly Upgrade Your Video Quality

Here’s what I’ve learned after working with hundreds of entrepreneurs — the videos that keep viewers watching are the ones that engage multiple senses. Sound effects are a huge part of that equation.

Think about it like seasoning food. Your video content is the meal. Sound effects are the seasoning. Without them, the dish is fine. With them, it’s memorable.

In my experience, adding even one or two well-placed sound effects per video can:

🎬 Signal scene transitions to keep viewers oriented

💥 Draw attention to important graphics or text on screen

😄 Add personality and humor that builds your brand

🔥 Increase watch time because engaged viewers stay longer

Because both Pixabay and Freesound are completely free, there is truly no reason not to start using sound effects today. Your videos will thank you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are free sound effects from Pixabay and Freesound safe to use on YouTube?

Yes! Pixabay offers royalty-free sound effects that are safe for YouTube without any attribution required. Freesound.org is also safe, but you should always check the license on each individual sound. If the sound carries a Creative Commons Zero (CC0) license, you can use it freely. If it has another license type, simply credit the creator in your video description and you’re good to go.

Do I need to pay anything to download from these free sound effects libraries?

Not a single cent. Both Pixabay and Freesound.org are completely free to use. Pixabay doesn’t even require an account. Freesound requires a free registration, but there’s no payment involved at any step. I’ve used both of these sites for years and have never paid for a sound effect from either of them.

How do I add downloaded sound effects to my videos?

Once you download a sound effect, it saves as an audio file to your computer. From there, you simply import it into your video editing software — whether that’s iMovie, CapCut, Premiere Pro, or any other editor you use. Drag it onto your timeline and position it wherever you want the sound to play. It’s as simple as that!

Sound effects are one of the easiest and most affordable upgrades you can make to your videos right now. With Pixabay’s 990,000+ options and Freesound’s half-million library, you have everything you need to make your content sound as amazing as it looks. Start experimenting today — I promise you’ll notice a difference immediately!
