YouTube Videos vs Instagram Reels: I Tested Both for 30 Days (Shocking Results)

What you'll learn in this post:

πŸ“Š Which platform got 3x more views and 6x more followers in my 30-day experiment

🎯 Why your audience's location matters more than you think for growing your business

πŸ’‘ How long-form video content boosts conversion rates and builds lasting business growth

If you've been wondering whether to focus on YouTube videos or Instagram Reels for your business, I ran a real 30-day experiment β€” and the results were genuinely shocking. Watch the video below and keep reading, because I'm breaking down everything I discovered so you can stop guessing and start growing.

Watch the Video Below:

My 30-Day YouTube vs Instagram Reels Experiment

As an Emmy Award winner who has helped hundreds of entrepreneurs use video to grow their businesses, I love testing things before I recommend them. So I decided to run a real experiment β€” no guessing, just data.

Here's exactly what I did during those 30 days:

πŸ“± Posted a Reel every single day on Instagram β€” that's 30 Reels total

🎬 Repurposed 12 of those Reels as YouTube Shorts

πŸ“Ή Created one long-form YouTube video in that same 30-day window

And the results? YouTube crushed it. I got 15,800 views on Instagram compared to over 41,000 views on YouTube β€” even though I posted less than half the content there.

But the follower numbers are where it gets really wild. After posting every single day on Instagram for 30 days, I gained just 19 new followers. On YouTube, I gained 135 new subscribers. That's six times more growth on YouTube with far less content posted.

Why Your Audience Location Changes Everything

Here's something most people never talk about β€” and it genuinely surprised me. Where your views come from matters just as much as how many views you get.

On Instagram, 30% of my views came from India and only 27% came from the United States. On YouTube, 43% of my views came from the United States and only 9% came from India.

Now, why does that matter? My ideal customer is based in English-speaking countries like the US and Canada. The average household income in the US is around $65,000 per year. When you convert India's average household income to US dollars, it's about $400 per month. Some of my online courses cost more than that. So while I absolutely love that people worldwide are watching, they aren't my ideal buyers.

There's a simple reason Instagram sent so much traffic from India. India has over 414 million Instagram users β€” more than double the US's 172 million. The Instagram algorithm is also currently showing Reels mostly to non-followers, which sounds great until you realize your existing audience isn't even seeing your content.

I encourage you to go back and rewatch this section of the video β€” it really helps it click when you see the numbers side by side.

Why Short-Form Videos Don't Build Your Business the Way You Think

Look, I love short-form video. I really do. But here's the truth I've learned after working with hundreds of entrepreneurs β€” short-form content alone will not build your business long-term.

Think about how you scroll through Reels or Shorts. You get that quick dopamine hit, laugh at something funny, and immediately move on. You're not thinking, "Wow, who is this amazing person I need to follow forever?" You're thinking, "Okay, next video."

That's the core problem with short-form as your only strategy:

⚑ Viewers are in entertainment mode, not connection mode

πŸ‘€ You engage them for seconds β€” not long enough to build real trust

πŸ“‰ The algorithm shows Reels to non-followers, so your current audience gets left behind

Short-form video works beautifully as a supplement. However, it should never be the foundation of your content strategy if growing your business is the goal.

The Real Power of Long-Form YouTube Video Content

YouTube is what I call an evergreen content machine. When you post a well-optimized long-form video, it doesn't disappear after 48 hours like a Reel often does. It lives on and keeps working for you β€” sometimes for years.

I'm still growing my email list and making sales from YouTube videos I created four years ago. That is the power of long-form content, and I've seen it transform businesses at every level.

Here's why YouTube long-form video wins for business growth:

πŸ” Google owns YouTube, so optimized videos can rank on page one of Google search results

🀝 Long-form video builds know, like, and trust β€” people buy from those they trust

πŸ“ˆ Studies show long-form video content boosts conversion rates by 34%

🌱 You grow organically with people actively searching for your topic β€” no ad spend needed

πŸ’° You can monetize your YouTube channel once you hit certain milestones β€” hello, extra income stream!

Because, as an Emmy Award-winning video expert, I've watched this play out over and over β€” the entrepreneurs who commit to long-form YouTube content are the ones who build real, sustainable businesses online.

My Content Strategy Moving Forward After This Experiment

After running this experiment, I made a clear decision about where to focus my energy. Here's my updated plan:

βœ… Long-form YouTube video is my top priority. That's where the views, subscribers, and sales are happening.

βœ… Instagram Reels remain part of my strategy β€” but as a supplemental stream, not the foundation.

βœ… I'm adding more carousel posts on Instagram because carousels are shown to existing followers more than Reels are. This helps me nurture and warm up my current audience.

The bottom line? Use short-form video to reach new people. Use long-form YouTube video to build authority, trust, and real business results. That balance is the sweet spot.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I focus on YouTube videos or Instagram Reels for my business?

Based on my 30-day experiment, YouTube long-form video is the stronger platform for business growth, lead generation, and sales. YouTube delivered three times more views and six times more subscribers than daily Instagram Reels posting. However, using both together β€” with YouTube as your foundation β€” gives you the best of both worlds. Short-form Reels can bring in new eyes, while long-form YouTube content converts viewers into buyers.

Why did Instagram Reels get so many views from India instead of the US?

India has over 414 million Instagram users β€” more than double the US's 172 million. Because the Instagram algorithm currently pushes Reels to non-followers globally, content about broad topics like video gets distributed worldwide. If your ideal customers are primarily in the US or other English-speaking countries, this geographic mismatch can seriously limit how useful those Instagram views actually are for your business.

How do I make my YouTube videos show up on Google search results?

Because Google owns YouTube, well-optimized YouTube videos can rank directly on page one of Google. The key is to research keywords your ideal customer is searching for, include those keywords in your title, description, and tags, and create a compelling thumbnail. Tools like VidIQ can help you with this optimization process. When done correctly, your video becomes a 24/7 marketing asset that works for you long after you hit publish.

The data is clear β€” if you want to build a business with video, long-form YouTube content is where the magic happens. Yes, keep making Reels. But make sure YouTube is at the core of your strategy, because that's where the trust, traffic, and sales truly come from.
